Frame by Frame
We took an artistic approach to illustrate a dark subject to remember
the victims in concentration camps of the Nazi regime.
Six lines of the poem Todesfuge by Paul Celan are implemented in the animation.
Paul contrasts positive and negative items to highlight the threat in concentration
camps. The black milk for instance shows this correlation of life and death.
The style of the animation is rough and played in 8 fps for a more fragile structure.
Time and place are kept vague and there are no symbols of that time period except
for the “SS Ehrenring” the soldier is wearing. The plot reveals itself in very short
sequences. The story revolves around the prisoner and the guard. The deeper the captive
is digging down, the emptier the glass of black milk and the shorter the lifespan of the
prisoner becomes. Meanwhile the guard is typing and signing the death certificate of the
digging prisoner.
